Donating the red stuff

There's a huge shortage of blood in blood banks right now. I've always wanted to give blood, but there's always been something blocking me. Too light (wish that was my problem right now), too soon after a tattoo, too soon after a piercing.

I wish I could get tested, then get a certificate of a clean bill of health to take to the Red Cross. I guess there's some logical reason for not letting recently pierced/tattooed people give blood, like the incubation time of certain diseases. It still makes me feel like I'm not doing enough to help.
Just take out the two fucking words, "under God."
Take off "in God we trust" on our money.
Make the Supreme Court knock of this "God save the court" bullshit.

Separation of church and state. Period. Is an athiest any less of an American?

Kill McDonalds Ad Execs

"Hi there Mr. Morning, my fav'rite time of day..."

AAAAAUUGHH KILL KILL DESTROY SINGING MCDONALDS CHILDREN!

Silver lining

On the upside Dan bought me that new chicken salad thing from Taco Bell last night and it's waiting for me in the fridge right now. Yay.

I'm cranky.

My leg still hurts. I was off of it all day yesterday and it STILL HURTS. I wanted to get some exercise today but no, I GUESS NOT. I'm really fucking tired. I only work until 11:00 today but that's too long. I have to sit in a boring-ass procedures meeting and talk about boring-ass routing guides that I DON'T CARE ABOUT. These meetings could be shaved down to fifteen minutes if everyone would quit staring at each other and suddenly remembering trite, inane things that don't matter. Damn corporate world. I just want to get some sleep.

Way back when

Jem.
Gummi Bears.
Rainbow Brite.
Care Bears.
My Little Pony.
I think I'll take a hiatus from Brunchma for a while. I'll have to find something else to do with all my free time at work, but them's the breaks. Whatever.

Addict

My ramen has egg in it today. Mmm....

Hmm, not enough garlic or cayenne. I will have to fix that tomorrow.

Gripe

I work with someone who pronounces the word "didn't" as "dint." It's really irritating.

Hot sweaty young people

The Social Distortion show at the Quest last night was the largest collection of pretty people I've seen in a long time. Young, old, big, small, punk, goth -- you name it. Lots and lots of pretty pretty people. I felt so inferior in my dirty shorts and old Rev105 t-shirt.

Every once in a while my maternal instinct rears its scary head. There were several people with kids at the show. These kids were maybe 12 or 13. More around 8-10. I kept thinking, "What are you DOING with kids at a punk show? Where are their earplugs? Somebody get those kids some earplugs!" What the hell?

It was so packed in there on both floors that there was barely room to move and it was too hot to move anyway. Kymm and I stood off to the side trying to get some air. She's pretty claustrophobic and I'm on the border about it. And the thought of someone else's sweat touching me (besides Dan's, of course) makes me want to vomit.

On a completely unrelated note my Chinese algae eater killed my one remaining black moor. It ate the scales right off of the poor thing and I think it just got tired of trying to fight back or run away. Poor thing. I guess I'll pick up some gouramis the next time I have money.
Mental note: Winamp hates Kazaa Lite.

Looney Tunes / Merrie Melodies on DVD Petition

For the love of Pete, sign this petition! Now!

Looney Tunes / Merrie Melodies on DVD Petition
I was editing an ID3 tag for a new MP3 and scrolling through the list of genres that Winamp gives me. I stumbled upon "Christian Gansta Rap." Please tell me this is a Nullsoft joke.

What genre is Tori Amos, anyway?
Hee hee.

Heh.... heh-heh.

*snrfl snort*

HA! HA-HA!

Po' Girl Korean Ramen

1 package Oriental flavor ramen
1/4 tsp. garlic salt
cayenne pepper to taste
tofu (for big spenders)

Smash up the ramen while it's still in the bag (it makes it easier to eat in one's cubicle at work). Dump the noodles, flavor packet (the whole thing, you wussies!), and seasonings in a gladware container. Add water almost to the top. Cover loosely and microwave for five minutes. Burn your hands taking it out. Let sit for five minutes. Burn tongue testing to see if it's ready after 30 seconds. Decide to wait the full five minutes for it to cool. Nurse wounds.
Yay! Going to the Social Distortion show tonight. Yay! Kris is my hero. Yay for Kris for picking up the tickets!
I've discovered the joys of text messaging on my new mobile phone. The only problem is that I'm way too anal to use those stupid little pseudo-133+ abbreviations. I will never, ever use "2" in place of "two, to, or too." I will always capitalize my i's and other proper nouns. I will always use punctuation. I'm a grammar snob that way.

This is not cool.

TAPPED OUT
Financially strapped Minnesota Brewing Co. has closed its historic brewery on St. Paul's West Seventh Street.

That means that unless Summit or some other company picks up the slack, there will be no more Grain Belt. No more Premium. No more Pig's Eye. It's a sad day for Saint Paul.

Woe.

Christina suggested that Traci and I swap workloads today and train each other on what we both do each day. I find myself being really angry about this. I have my comfortable little world in my cubicle with my comfortable little workload. I don't care what Traci does each day. I don't want to learn cash application. I have enough to worry about with credit cards, terms, procedures, catalogs, routing guides, and all my other crap. I don't feel comfortable doing something after being trained on it for one day and I don't feel comfortable with someone else doing my stuff after being trained for only one day. Argh.

Yep, I've definately done it.

Ow. Need painkillers. Leg hurts. Ow.

Monday, June 24, 2002

Now I've done it.

I think I screwed up my leg today. It was hurting this morning for no apparent reason when I got up. It felt like a shin splint, but wider and deeper. I haven't jogged since Friday, so what's the deal? So my bright idea of the day was to go jogging. "I'll just grin and bear it," were the words running through my mind. While I was running it hurt, but it wasn't that bad. I decided not to go all the way around the lake and just ran around about a quarter, which really isn't a lot at all. The bad part is that to get home I have to go up hills. Depending on which way I go it's either an evil, sharp hill or a gradual incline. I usually take the gradual incline. Bad choice. At least if I take the evil hill route I'm walking on mostly flat ground until the end.

Anyway, I got home, sat down, and decided that it might be better if I were to gnaw my leg off at the knee. I could barely walk. I hobbled to the bathroom and sat in some hot water for a while, gave myself a little rubdown with rubbing alcohol, and now here I sit. Still in pain, but not quite so bad anymore. I wonder what tomorrow is going to be like. Why must my life be full of staircases?

It's Monday again. Damn.

We drove down to Cabella's in Owatonna this weekend. Dead animals everywhere. Surprisingly, I didn't see one mullet the entire time. Weird.

We saw Star Wars Episode II last night. Besides the horrible, awful dialogue ("What a drag!" "I'm beside myself!" "This party's finished!" etc.), I didn't think the story was that bad.

I guess this means I'm special

I got an email from Steve telling me that is recording engineer is god-like and not to be questioned. I conceded that the mix was only bad on one song, and promised to buy his CD. So I hope I'm not a blaspheme anymore. Sorry, Steve!

We're having people over at the apartment tonight. Among them will be my ex-who-is-now-gay (2.0), Matthew. I haven't seen him in almost exactly a year. Something tells me I'm going to need a lot of alcohol tonight.

Thursday, June 20, 2002

Ooo!

Steve makes fine music. Very fine. I might even buy the CD when it comes out. Steve needs to shoot his recording engineer, however.

Steeeeeve!

I found a link at Que Sera Sera (see link to the left under blogs) for Steve's Web Page. You know. Steve. From Blue's Clues.

This man is hilarious. This actually made me laugh out loud:

what did you do to your hair?
i shaved it.

why would you do that?
are you making some sort of statement?

yes. the statement is, "i have male pattern baldness."

I'm downloading one of his MP3s right now. I'm painfully curious.

Paul Westerberg

I'm listening to some of the tracks off of Paul Westerber's new CD, Stereo (or Mono-Stereo or Stereo-Mono, depending on who you ask), and I'm very disappointed. It sounds as if old Paul found a stash of Quaalude. The songs are boring, meandering numbers that don't have much rhythm or melody, not to mention any harmony whatsoever.

Ah-ha.

I was having a problem with yesterday's nightly build of Mozilla and Blogger. I'd only get one teeny little line to make my entry. So I downgraded to Build ID 2002053012 and everything seems kosher now. Yay!

Now if only I could get Winamp to work properly. It likes to play part of a song, then just stop and refuse to play any more. So I'm downloading Beta 3. Wishing for luck.

explodingdog

Hooray for Patrick at Infinetivity

I will soon have a functioning cgi-bin directory. Yay!

Okay, yeah, I can see that.

i'm a pup.what kinda pet are you?
quiz made by muna.

That's a lot of... stuff.

According to eWeek, "within 18 months or so, experts say, a company or organization somewhere in the world will reach a petabyte of storage for a database." That's 1,000 terabytes. If my poor math serves me right, that's 50,000,000 20-GB hard drives. That's a hell of a lot of ones and zeros.

And in ten years we're going to look back on this and say, "Petabyte? That's nothing!" Then we'll go back to playing solitaire in our bionic brains.
As I was walking around my end of Minneapolis last night I played "guess who's an art major!" in my head. I guess it was a little too easy, as I was right next to the Walker Art Center, the local giant modern art museum.

Speaking of the Walker, I found this fun review at Citysearch.com:
Not even worth it when it's free...
The Walker is great place for the American taxpayer to see NEA grant money in action: a vest of flank steaks, a rose in a vial, a series of fluorescent lights... I'm certain that many pseudo-intellectuals understand the "deep" meaning of the Walker's artwork, but much of it is junk. For a REAL avante-garde museum, go to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

I like the Walker for sheer entertainment value, but I have to agree.

More tweaking

I fixed my archives. I'm now archiving by month because it's just easier that way.

THE MOST DISTURBING DREAM EVAAAARRRR

Last night I dreamed I was pregnant. As if that wasn't bad enough, I was at the very end of the pregnancy. I started going into labor and Dan was driving me to the hospital. Oops! I gave birth in the car. IT WAS A FULL GROWN CAT. Attached to me by umbilical cord and everything. Covered in goo and everything. Afterbirth everywhere. It was WAY too realistic. Of course, I was a little freaked out, but I kept the umbilical cord attached so I could prove to the doctors when we got to the hospital when we got there that yes, indeed, I had given birth to a cat.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!

I kept thinking, "Oh my gods they're going to think I had sex with a cat." That makes a surprisingly large amount of sense for a dream.

Remind me NEVER to study anatomy and physiology right before bedtime ever again.

Getting things worked out.

OKAY! I finally know why my blog has been borked. Mozilla has a bug that wipes out attributes on HTML tags entered within a <TEXTAREA>. It took out my VALIGN=TOP attribute for the right side of my blog, hence the stupid space between the top of the page and the top of the right column. I'll have to remember only to update my template with MSIE until they get the Mozilla bug figured out. Phew!

Can I go hoooooome now?

Printer Jam

Any tard helmet can open the printer cover, lift the toner cartrage out, and remove the offensive paper jam.

But I guess that I have to be that specific tard helmet. Every time.
Well, I've got it almost back to normal. Blogger was ripping out parts of my HTML and tossing them to the wind. There's still an annoying space on the top of the right column that won't go away, but I'll give it time.
AAAARGH! Blogger is borking up my blog template!
I seem to have borked the right side of my blog somehow. Hmm...

Lookie! Lookie!

I have comments on my Blog now! Yay!
Dave Pirner: stop it. Just stop it.

Wow!

I jogged last night. A long time. Way longer than I'd ever imagined I'd go after not jogging at all for about a year. I walked around Loring Park, then jogged across the bridge to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, where I jogged almost the entire perimeter. Okay, so I'm not exactly ready for Grandma's Marathon, but I feel pretty damn good about myself. I was in the zone. And I'm not sore today. I sat in the pool for a few minutes afterwards and almost froze my ass off (literally). But I felt good. I'm going again tonight if it isn't pouring rain when I get home.

Monday, June 17, 2002

And then...

Last night made up for the weekend completely. Dan took me to Murray's in Minneapolis for their "Silver Butterknife Steak for Two."

Woah.

That was, without a doubt, the best meal I have ever had in my life.

Whoo!

I keep seeing that Coke commercial with the Counting Crows and thinking how absolutely adorable Adam Duritz is. Awwww!

*slap*

Okay, I'm better now.

Caffeine!

If I had to describe New Ulm, Minnesota in one word I'd have to say "German." Really. This town is more German than a town in Germany. They've got a big glockenspiel in town and signs that say in happy German-looking font "Auf Wiedersehen!" on the edges of town and guys walking around in liederhosen (really) and sausage houses and a mall (I use that term loosely) called "Marktplatz." Wow. The armory the reception was at looked like a castle from the outside and looked like, well, an armory on the inside. Armorys (armories?) always have waxed wood floors and basketball hoops. And lots of important-looking metal filing cabinets. I'm sure this one had a wet bar hidden in it somewhere. The one in Duluth has one so naturally I assume that they've all got one.

I wish I would have gone to my cousin's graduation party in Rochester. My family is endlessly more entertaining than a bunch of senior citizens and a polka band. That's right, a polka band. A freaking polka band. My dad got really drunk and kept trying to make me dance, but I guess I'm just too cool for polka. Actually, I'm too uncoordinated. Not to mention the fact that my dad was actually knocking people over on the dance floor and stepping on toes and generally looking like a short, drunk Pollock with little or no control over his motor skills. And I was wearing open-toed shoes.

Friday, June 14, 2002

I have to go to Jules' dad's wedding in New Ulm this weekend and to that I say, "nngh." I hope the Holiday Inn has a hot tub.

When are you most relaxed?

You know those "get to know your friends" quizzes you get in your email? They've usually got a question like, "when are you most relaxed?" I really started thinking about this question. I could say "when I'm on a tropical island floating on an air mattress in the ocean with a mai tai in my hand," but how often does that happen? No, I'd have to say that my state of relaxation is a lot more mundane and attainable. It's when I'm peeing. Think about it. You're relaxing a muscle that you usually have clenched. You're releasing bodily waste. It's effortless. And, unlike pooping, your're not on the toilet long enough to make your butt or legs fall asleep. That, my friends, is relaxation.

I hate MTV.

Who thinks that spraying someone with poop is funny? Who thinks putting a fake corpse in someone's hotel room is funny? The show is named "Harassment?" What is wrong with these people?

Legal Suits That Make Sense

Couple Sues Over Hidden-Camera 'Corpse' Prank
Thu Jun 13, 8:04 AM ET

By Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - MTV has been slapped with a $10 million lawsuit from a couple who say they were surprised by a fake corpse in their hotel room as part of a hidden-camera prank for a reality TV show.

James and Laurie Ann Ryan, of Washington, D.C., also named the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas in the suit, which accuses the resort and the cable network of invasion of privacy, infliction of emotional distress and fraud, among other things, their attorney said Wednesday.

The suit, originally filed in Los Angeles in April but gaining public attention this week after it was moved to federal court, said the couple became unwitting participants in a practical joke filmed for a series under development at MTV called "Harassment" while they were on vacation in January.

Upon entering the hotel room, the Ryans "discovered what appeared to be a dead human body covered and surrounded by blood, evidently the victim of a homicide," as hidden cameras recorded their shock, the suit says.

As the couple tried to flee, two actors posing as security guards blocked their way, and a third individual in the guise of a paramedic entered the room.

The show's host and co-producer, Ashton Kutcher, who has described the series in interviews as a "guerrilla-style Candid Camera," finally emerged to reveal the prank.

The Ryans were not amused. They are seeking $10 million in compensatory damages against MTV, the Hard Rock Hotel and Kutcher, who also is named in the suit, said their lawyer, Daniel Rozansky.

Both the cable network, which is owned by Viacom Inc., and the privately owned hotel declined to comment on the case.

An MTV spokeswoman said the incident in question was filmed as part of a pilot episode for "Harassment," which has not aired. She said the future status of the program is uncertain.

"Harassment" is not the first reality show to land MTV in legal trouble. Two teenage girls sued the network in April, 2001 after they were sprayed with human excrement by performers billed as the "Shower Rangers" during the taping of a program called "Dude, This Sucks."

MTV apologized for the incident and promised never to air footage of the incident. That suit remains in litigation, the girls' high-profile Los Angeles attorney Gloria Allred told Reuters.

Now this is interesting.

Medical jargon

Prefixes and suffixes are swarming around my head like gnats.

Moving right along....

I'm taking the day off of work to study. I finished my Handling and Restraint study unit and got my next batch of materials in the mail today. It's got all sorts of fun stuff like a veterinary dictionary and flashcards and pronounciation cassettes and stuff. I'm taking a small break right now before I dive into that stuff. Now the real meat of this course begins. I hope I can follow this.

Mozilla, you are beautiful and fabulous.
I love you.
The Mozilla open-source browser intrigues me. So does Netscape 7, with its tabbed windows. But I can't seem to download Netscape 7. I'll try Mozilla....

Eew.

Why is Papa Roach the Launch Artist of the Month? This is as bad as Eminem. Have these people ever actually listened to this band? Oh, wait, this is the music industry. Money will buy you a spotlight anywhere regardless of talent.

Laze.

I have things to do.

Boring things. Things that should get done something relatively soon.

But I don't want to do them. I want to sit here and drink coffee and stare at the pile of stuff and scoff at it.

It's mostly filing, anyway.

Indecisive

It's too late to start playing FFX. I think I'll play the Sims.

The 'burbs

The thing I really hate about the suburbs is the lack of good, cheap restaurants. There's fast food, and then there's good fast food. I long to lunch at Baha Tortilla Grill, Big Mike's, or Jimmy John's.

Ole?

I love Chipotle but damn that's a lot of food.

Dreaming.

I've been having a lot of dreams about airplanes and flying lately. By "a lot" I mean two right in a row, which is odd for me. The first dream was terrifying. I was on a plane with some other people to go to England for whatever reason. It was a 747, but the inside was tiny. And I think the pilot was on crack. He kept going straight up in the air, then doing barrel rolls down again and buzzing the highways and in general making me very sick. Nobody else on the plane seemed to think this was a problem.

In the next dream Dad and Jules were manning some sort of weird air traffic control station and they decided that they were bored and they were going to take their plane out flying. So they left me in charge. I had no idea what I was doing. I was basically told, "Look for planes that might crash." Sure. Okay. Will do.

Maybe all these dreams about travel are stemming from my inability to make a decision on whether or not I'm going to the Brunchmeet in Chicago in August. I'm leaning towards saving my money. And nobody has expressed interest in rooming with me anyway.

Continued...

Am I going to my five year high school reunion? Most likely. Why? I have no idea. I hated high school. Everything about it. I guess I have this sick urge to see how people turned out. Whose life is more miserable? Evil Jenn wants to point and laugh. Someone on Classmates.com registered a name as "PREPS ARE STILL BITCHES," which cracks me up.

Why am I always back in high school in my dreams? It's really annoying. Why not college? I went there, too. C'mon, subconscious, what's going on here?

Meeeemories...

Every few months or so I turn to Dan and say, "You know, our five year high school reunions are next year."

I did that last night. And it seems more poignant now that two of my cousins are graduating from high school right now. Scary. Somehow it seemed like they would never really grow up. Like they'd stay my little cousins forever or something.

Finally did it.

I finally got my nose pierced today. Yay! I can't wait until I can put a smaller gold hoop in, because this silver captured ball hoop makes my nose look even bigger and wider than it already is. And the little ball bothers me. I think I'll rotate it so it's inside my nose and hope that it doesn't make me sneeze. It really doesn't hurt much, but I guess that's because it's cartilage. It made my eyes water something fierce when he was piercing it, though. I was so excited about having it done I walked out without tipping the guy. Ack! I felt so horrible about it because he was such a great guy that I marched home and threw five dollars and an apology in an envelope and mailed it off to him. I believe I'll go back for my navel piercings. I really like that place.

Thursday, June 06, 2002

I've been using Windows Media Player for an hour or so because WinAmp doesn't like it when my system resources are low. It pretty much crosses its arms, pouts, and refuses to give me any music. Damn WinAmp. Anyway, I can't stand the WMP playlist. What? A song title and length is all I get? Not good enough.

Scraping.

No phone calls. Nothing to organize. Nothing to clean. I guess I'll make stuff up.

...

There. My desk is now germ-free.

Lunch.

Fantastic Foods makes the best cup o' mashed potatoes in Sweet Creamery Butter flavor. Buy it, eat it, love it, sing its praises. It's...

...wait for it...

........yummy. HA! You thought I was going to say "fantastic," didn't you? DIDN'T YOU?

Feeling accomplished

I got a great sense of accomplishment last night for going one mile on my Gazelle. It may not seem like much, but there's a lot of work involved on that thing. I'm surprised my bad knee feels as good as it does today. Must have been the brace-thing I've been wearing. Hurt like a bitch when I was working out, though. It took my 20 minutes to go one mile last night. I'm going to shoot for a 30 minute workout tonight when I get home and see how far I can get. Then I really have to study.
Yup.
Mmm hmm.
Nothing to do.
I'll sit here and type so it sounds like I'm doing something. Oh look, it's 10:41. Time to eat again.

Blasphemous fun brought to you by Divine Interventions

I've taken to drinking Folgers single serving coffee. Coffee in a tea bag. With seemingly enough caffeine to kill an elephant. See that wall over there? Watch me vibrate right through it!

I'm feeling very tense and very sore today. I didn't exercise yesterday, but I did study and clean the kitchen. I'll do some yoga tonight, I think.
Now that I know what I know... ARGH! QUIT PLAYING THAT SONG, DRIVE105!

I fired off a slightly inflammatory email to Drive105 yesterday telling them to quit playing fucking U2 every fucking hour of the day. I've only been listening to the radio for about 5 minutes now, but so far so good. Except for this damn now that I know what I know I know I'll always love you song. Grr.

According to the Fortean Times:

June 4. On this day in 1974, Mrs Candelaria Villanueva, 52, had been in the sea with a lifejacket for more than twelve hours after the ship she was on, the Aloha, caught fire and sank 600 miles south of Manila, Philippines. A giant sea turtle appeared beneath her and supported her until her rescue by the navy vessel Kalantia. A smaller turtle climbed on her back and bit her every time she felt drowsy and was in danger of submerging her head in the water. After the rescue, the bigger turtle circled the area twice before taking off.

This cracks me up, but there is a very disturbing Big Brother-ish part in the last paragraph:

I feel brain dead today. Little things are pissing me off. I'm not in a bad mood because I'm too glazed over to care. Monday

Duluth was fun. Relaxing. I found that I just can't seem to drink alcohol anymore without being in some serious pain. Same with caffeine, but I don't think I can give that up just yet. This weekend was filled with lots and lots of MEAT and I feel very fat today. The six of us consumed 6 pork chops, 2 pounds of hamburger, 2 chicken kabobs, 8 cheddarwursts, and lots and lots of pasta and potato salad. Oh, then there was the entire package of bacon and 12 eggs the next morning. And hash browns. Damn. I have to get my rollerblades out of Dan's car and get going this week.
